“Walpole Rookie” Visits Bristol Area Lions Club

The Bristol Area Lions Club were entertained at their most recent meeting by Red Sox Fantasy Camp graduate Bud Elwin, who recounted his yearlong baseball odyssey from visiting Cooperstown’s Baseball Hall of Fame to playing a game on Red Sox home turf at Fenway Park. The talk was preceded by a sing-along of Take Me Out to the Ballgame, complete with Cracker Jack for all participants.

Sporting his full Red Sox uniform, Bud Elwin explained his long road to fantasy camp. In what started out as a dare from his wife, he worked with a personal trainer to get in shape and marketed Red Sox memorabilia to earn the tuition for an 8-day fantasy camp in Fort Myers, FL last winter. During the rigorous camp Elwin rubbed shoulders with several of his idols. Just 2 months ago he participated in a Fantasy Camp reunion baseball game in none other than Fenway Park. Nicknamed the “Rookie from Walpole,” Elwin now has a sports management agent and plans to return to camp this winter. His overall message, that it is never too late to pursue one’s dream, came through very clearly to the Bristol Lions in attendance.

In the business meeting that followed this presentation, members learned that the Bristol Area Lions Foundation is accepting donations from the community in memory of Pat Harrison, who for many years was an active member of the Bristol Area Lions Club.

At their next meeting on October 18, members of the Bristol Area Lions Club will learn about recent improvements to the Bristol Library with library director Jackie Bennett. To make dinner reservations for that meeting, or to learn more about the Bristol Area Lions Club, please call Al Rottner at 677-2095.
