Bristol Lions Scholarships Awarded 07/07/2013

The Bristol Area Lions would like to congratulate four outstanding seniors from Lincoln Academy’s Class of 2013 who were each recently awarded $2000 scholarships by the Bristol Area Lions Foundation.

Benjamin E. Hoagland of Walpole, was awarded the Ed & Gladys Lewis Scholarship and will attend Saint Michael’s College in Vermont to study Fine Arts, History and Business with a goal of being an art teacher. In addition to excellent academic work with a number of Honors and AP courses he was on the golf team four years, started an LA Skiing & Snowboard Club, and was a member of Alpha Sigma Gamma Fraternity, National Honor Society, Medic Club, Tech Team and Outing Club. He has been honored at the Blaine House for excellence in Art and has demonstrated outstanding community service, volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters for three years and at Weymouth House after-school program two days a week for two years.

Tara E. Gauntt of New Harbor was awarded the Pat Harrison Scholarship. She will attend Maine Maritime Academy to learn marine transportation operations with a goal of a career on the water, hoping to work her way up to captain. Tara challenged herself with honors and AP classes, earning excellent grades. Her athletics included softball (captain 2 years), Southern Maine Fusion softball, indoor track, field hockey and golf. She was voted as most athletic senior female. Her other interests included Tech Team, National Honor Society and Interact club. She has served as a volunteer at Lincoln County Animal Shelter and at Bonita’s Daycare.

Karie Carrothers of Walpole received the Ralph and Peggy Hunt Scholarship. She will attend the University of Maine at Farmington with a goal of becoming a teacher of special education. She has an inspiring story of overcoming an early learning disability and her desire to help others. She has been a Girl Scouts of America ambassador, an International Club member, a volunteer fire fighter for South Bristol Fire Department and a volunteer camp counselor for Main Idea.

The Lions Vocational Scholarship was awarded to Joshua F. Bennett of Walpole who will attend Southern Maine Community College. Joshua will study computer technology in a two year program and has long term interest in film making. He received Lincoln Academy’s Directors Choice Award for hard work and dedication to performing arts. He was a jazz band member and helped others as a Tech Team member. Helping others was also evident in his community service work at the Bristol Library and the after-school program at Weymouth House.
