The meeting on May 4 was strictly business as the Bristol Area Lions detailed plans for their summer fund raisers to benefit their scholarship fund and local charities.

Raffle tickets will again be sold in front of Reilly’s Market on Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm from June 13 to Sept. 5. The drawing will be held on Labor Day at the Willing Workers Hall. This year the third prize gift certificate for The Anchor restaurant in Round Pond has been increased from $25 to $50. Lions Brendan Donegan and Tom MacGregor will be the co-chairmen.

There will be only one Trunk Sale this year on Saturday, July 18 at the Bristol Area school parking lot led by Lion David Kolodin. We will again rent spaces and tables to multiple vendors.

The Golf Tournament will be on Saturday, August 8 at the Wawenock Golf Club led by Lion John Janell. There will be no Silent Auction this year, instead local businesses who donated goods in the past will be asked to be a sponsor of the Golf Tournament. All Lions will be seeking sponsorships for the Tournament.

In other business, Scholarship Chairman Michael Hope announced that he had sent out letters to parents of this year’s Lincoln Academy graduates who live in Bristol and South Bristol. The scholarship application deadline was May 10 for the club’s four $2,000 scholarships to be awarded June 1 at Class Day.

New member, Alfred Ajami will be the speaker at our next meeting on May 18 at 6:00 at the Willing Workers Hall. His topic will be: “The adventures of an itinerant drug hunter”. A Harvard graduate, who earned several higher degrees, started a biotech company and was an experimental scientist first in pharmacology, then oncology and immunology.

Ajami is now in semi-retirement as a consultant on drug discovery for rare and underserved diseases. He would like to expand his involvement as a mentor to young scientists.

To make reservations for that meeting please call Herb Watson at 677-6191. To learn more about the Bristol Area Lions, serving Bristol and South Bristol please call Walt Johansson.
