At the meeting on Sept. 21 the Bristol Area Lions heard from Annie Rose Williams, a nutritionist and neighbor of Lion David Kolodin.

Williams earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Bowdoin College in 1985 and her Masters degree in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT in 2012.

Between 1985 and 2012 she established herself as a photographer, specializing in children and families, a passion she still enjoys. This opportunity of observing the life styles of adults and children led to a realization of the importance of good nutrition and motivated her to become a certified Health Coach through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition.

Her fascination with biochemistry and the science of nutrition led her to graduate school. Annie is a member of the Institute for Functional Medicine and she keeps up to date on the latest health and nutritionist research by regularly attending workshops and conferences in the field.

Williams used a PowerPoint presentation to demonstrate how a long term plan to incorporate healthier food and lifestyle choices into their daily lives is needed.
She showed four very different areas in the world where longevity is believed to be due to the local diet and lifestyle. Sardinia was one of the areas and their diet included red wine and dark chocolate which resonated with the Lions.

Making informed and conscious decisions can lead to the prevention, or, amelioration of many chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

The speakers for the Oct. 5 meeting will be Mary Kate Reny and Jenny Mayher speaking on “Smart growth on the mid-coast Route 1 corridor.” Reny has a master’s degree from the Muskie School in community planning and development. Mayher is the Communications and Community Engagement Manager at Lincoln Academy.

To make dinner reservations for that meeting please call Herb Watson at 677-6191. To learn more about the Bristol Area Lions, serving Bristol and South Bristol, call Walt Johannson at 677-2584.
