At the meeting on Oct.19 the Bristol Area Lions heard from Jenny Pendleton, president and executive director of Caring for Kids. She has been helping local children for 23 years.

The Caring for Kids mission is to support the needs of local children on a charitable basis including, but not limited to nutritional, educational and clothing needs. It is a known fact that children who eat healthier can think better, learn more and make wiser choices.

The community Christmas program was started in 1992 helping over 90 children each year to have a happy holiday. Recipients may receive a new warm winter jacket, snow pants, winter boots, a hat, mittens, fleece blanket, pajamas, undergarments, socks, toys and books along with personal hygiene items.

The snack pack program was started in September, 2010. It provides juice, fresh fruit or veggies and 5-6 pre-packaged snacks every weekend for Bristol and South Bristol students that are already receiving free or reduced price breakfast/lunch at school. The snack pack program is totally free of charge. It started with 29 Bristol children and today there are over 60.

It is an all-volunteer organization with a core of over 30 helpers from the community with 8-10 turning out each week to assemble the snack packs. During the summer months a food box for the whole family is provided which includes bottles of juice, fresh fruits and many pre-packaged snacks.

The programs are funded by donations, grants, and proceeds from the Once Again Shop, a thrift shop located downstairs at the Congregational Church of Bristol Fellowship Hall, across from Town Hall. Donations of clean clothing in good condition may be dropped off Monday, Thursday or Friday mornings.

Previously operating under the church’s 501C3, last month the organization received their own 501C3. If you wish to help support the program, a tax-deductible donation may be mailed to: Caring for Kids, P.O. Box 412, New Harbor, ME 04554.

Our speaker for the next meeting on Nov. 2 will be Vice District Governor, Michelle Crocker, we will hear what other Lions clubs in Maine are accomplishing.

To make a dinner reservation for that meeting please call Herb Watson at 677-6191. To learn more about the Bristol Area Lions, serving Bristol and South Bristol, call Walt Johansson at 677-2584.
