Hearty Roots Director Haley Bezon accepts a donation and thank you from Bristol Area Lions Foundation Secretary John Janell after her interesting presentation.

On Monday, April 2, Hearty Roots Director Haley Bezon explained the unique program of the organization to the Bristol Area Lions Club.

Bezon has a bachelor’s degree in social work and a master’s degree in school counseling and elementary education.  She moved to Maine seven years ago from Alaska, where she worked in the wilderness therapy behavioral health field taking at-risk teenagers on 50-day paddling and mountaineering expeditions.

As the school counselor and guidance teacher at Edgecomb Eddy School, working with kids everyday to tackle problems and strengthen social and emotional skills, she saw a need.  Bezon formed Hearty Roots just last year aiming to empower kids to disconnect from devices and reconnect through authentic relationships, mindfulness practices, and exciting outdoor adventures.

Hearty Roots is a fusion of mindfulness programming and outdoor adventures, collaborating with the Boothbay Region Land Trust and Hidden Valley Nature Center. The plan for the summer of 2018 is to use the restorative powers of nature; youth age 10-13 will be immersed in exceptional programming that builds esteem, strengthens social and emotional skill development, and encourages a connection to the natural playground that surrounds our area.   There are nine youths with three counselors spending four days and a one-night campout sessions paddle boarding, hiking and yoga with two sessions for boys and three sessions for girls.

Sessions are led by professional counselors and backcountry experts who introduce kids to outdoor sports on local public lands that they will return to for future healthy outlet pursuits.  Hearty Roots guiding principles: relationships + outdoor adventures + mindfulness programming = resilience.

To enable Hearty Roots a 501 (c) (3) organization to expand and serve more youth with scholarships for the program one can send a check to: Hearty Roots, P.O. Box 302, Bristol, ME 04539

The next Bristol Area Lions Club meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 7 at the Willing Workers Hall in New Harbor.  This will be the annual business meeting to nominate officers and directors for the coming fiscal year and plan the club’s summer fund-raising events and annual activities.
