On June 19, the Bristol Area Lions Club held their annual meeting at the Willing Workers Hall. Their $2,000 scholarship winners and one of their parents were dinner guests sponsored by individual club members.

After dinner, each graduate thanked the club and told them why they selected their college and their planned major course of study.

Julianna Preston, of South Bristol, plans a major in art history at Bard College. Kaden Pendleton, of New Harbor, plans a major in elementary education at the University of Maine at Farmington. Constance Mullin, of Bristol, plans to study nursing at S. Anselm College. Evan Eckel, of Pemaquid, plans to major in aviation and professional flight at Purdue University.

The Lincoln Academy graduates impressive scholastic achievements, extracurricular activities, and community service were detailed in that article.

The special dinner for the annual meeting consisted of an appetizer, tossed salad, a choice of steak with béarnaise sauce or baked stuffed haddock, followed by fresh strawberry shortcake with homemade whipped cream prepared by Deb’s Bristol Diner.

The American Red Cross Blood Drive held at the Willing Workers Hall on June 20 was disappointing. There were only thirteen successful donors, but two were the Power Red type, red blood cells only, which are the equivalent of two donations, making a total of fifteen. Two of the preregistrations did not appear and there were four rejections. Last year at the same time 23 pints were collected vs. the American Red Cross goal of 29. A pint has the potential to save three lives.

This year two Bristol Lions were successful donors, both over 80 years old. Next year the advertising will be increased along with a more extensive outreach to the community.
