At its final meeting of the 2013-14 season, the Bristol Area Lions Club celebrated its many accomplishments during the previous twelve months and welcomed new officers for the coming year.

Outgoing King Lion John Janell reminded members of the Club’s many endeavors to raise money in order to donate those funds back to the community. Four scholarship fundraisers dominated the summer months of 2013: raffle ticket sales in New Harbor, trunk sales in Bristol, a Treasures and Treats sale in New Harbor, and the annual Bristol Lions golf tournament and silent auction at Wawenock Golf Club in Walpole.

This summer, in addition to ongoing raffle ticket sales, a trunk sale is scheduled for Saturday, July 29, and the popular golf tournament and silent auction will take place at Wawenock on Saturday, August 16.

This past year also included five major civic accomplishments: a Liberty Day event at the Bristol Consolidated School to introduce fifth graders to Senator Chris Johnson and to learn about the Constitution; delivery of fifty-seven food baskets to needy families at Christmas; a successful Speak-Out Speech contest for Lincoln Academy students, with prizes; an extensive roadside clean-up in April that brought together sixty-one volunteers from eight organizations; and the awarding of three academic scholarships and one technical scholarship of $2,000 each for post-secondary education, to deserving graduating seniors of Lincoln Academy.

The June 16th dinner at the Club’s Willing Workers Hall ended with officer inductions for the 2014-15 year. The Bristol Area Lions Club’s new King Lion is Pemaquid resident Brendan Donegan, who brings fresh ideas to the organization. Michael Hope will continue as Club Treasurer, John Janell will serve as Club Secretary, and Walt Johansson will continue as Membership Chair. Other members were thanked as well for serving the Club in various capacities over the last year.
